APOD: 2008 June 6 - Two Armed Spiral Milky Way
The latest theory on the structure of our Milky Way. Be sure to mouse over the picture (after clicking through) to see where our sun sits in this picture.
APOD: 2008 May 30 - Descent of the Phoenix
There it is. I originally commented on this amazing photo here.
APOD: 2008 May 26 - A New Horizon for Phoenix
It was weird going to a cookout yesterday and coming back home to find pictures from the surface of Mars taken by a space probe that entered and landed on Mars before we left the house. Very cool.
APOD: 2008 May 20 - The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies
This kind of thing is just mind blowing. To think about how many civilizations there are and how much galactic drama is taking place in this one picture…
APOD: 2008 May 17 - Logarithmic Spirals
Not only do spiral galaxies look like hurricanes, they also look like soap bubbles going down a drain and any number of other swirly things. It makes you wonder what’s really going on. Is our universe just an elementary particle in a universe “higher” up? That seems so organized, and yet so scary, that it’s just the way things should be.
APOD: 2008 May 3 - Alborz Mountain Milky Way
This is what it looks like to be inside something that looks like this from the outside.
APOD: 2008 April 26 - The Tarantula Zone
The rich field is about as wide as four full moons on the sky …
I’m starting to notice when they say things like that, and I suppose what it means is that if you could just crank the sensitivity of your eyeballs, you could see more stuff like this even without a telescope. Something as wide 4 full moons is pretty big in the sky. Not being an astronomer, I’m often puzzled as to where these spectacular views are if you just went outside and pointed.
APOD: 2008 April 24 - Cygnus Without Stars
This huge sky-wad of hydrogen looks like an abstract painting.
Be sure to mouse over the picture (after clicking through) to see what it looked like before they digitally removed the stars.
APOD: 2008 April 21 - Bacteriophages: The Most Common Life Like Form on Earth
I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call this an Astronomy Picture.
That being said, these things look freaky. They call these
… a potential ally against bacteria that cause human disease, although bacteriophages are not yet well enough understood to be in wide spread medical use.
Please continue testing very thoroughly before you put any of those things into people intentionally. They look like something out of The Matrix.
